City of Carson Community Center

A Building for the Future

History of the New Community Center

In 1996 the Council approved the purchase of the old county building and land on Commercial Street specifically for a new community building, using general fund tax dollars (approximately $27,000). This project has remained on the back burner mainly because of the lack of funding possibilities.

Because of other budgetary restraints in our City, the Council and Committee thought it best to attempt funding by grants, fundraisers, and outside pledges. With very limited tax involvement, even to the extent that rental revenue should maintain the facility.

With the sale of the American Legion Building, this project has been moved to the front burner. In the fall of 2003 a committee was formed to spearhead the design concept in order to participate in 2004 grant season. After interviewing different architectural firms, Emswiler Architecture was selected. Emswiler Architecture has completed the preliminary schematic design.

This new facility would provide a handicap accessible multi functional community room to provide space for the following purposes: Senior Citizen Activities, Youth Activities, “Traveling” Physical Therapy Station, Civic Group Meetings, Red Cross Activities, Emergency Operations Center, Large Family and community Celebrations, and a Voting Precinct. The floor plan will include handicap accessible community facility, which will include the following: large multi-functional community room, 4-5 additional meeting rooms to be utilized on a daily basis.

The Committees’ design calls for it to be approximately 11,000 square foot brick design reminiscent of a railroad depot, with an estimated cost of $1.3 million. Building the center is totally dependent on raising funds. As to date the project has received the following in funding: $200,000 grant from the Iowa West Foundation, $4,400 grant from Farm Bureau, Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors has pledged $75,000, Rolling Hills Bank has pledged $10,000.
